OVERVIEW
Northern Pike were detected in Box Canyon Reservoir, Pend Oreille River in a 2004. The population exploded between 2006 and 2010, going from approx. 400 to 5500. Pike are non-native apex predators and all other fish are on their menu. They are a significant threat to native trout, salmon and steelhead. The Kalispel Tribe has effectively suppressed the Pike population in the Pend Oreille River through an intense effort of gill netting areas that the Pike spawn in the spring. Check out the video below for a detailed history of our struggle to protect our fisheries from the devastating impacts of a Northern Pike infestation.
